Stacked Housing - 3 exeptional projects

The Interlace, Singapore 2013

OMA with Ole Scheeren Architect
Designed by Ole Scheeren, partner of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), The Interlace breaks away from Singapore’s standard typology of isolated, vertical apartment towers and instead explores a dramatically different approach to tropical living: an expansive interconnected network of living and communal spaces integrated with the natural environment.

Thirty-one apartment blocks, each six-stories tall and identical in length, are stacked in a hexagonal arrangement to form eight large-scale open and permeable courtyards. more OMA

Rokko Housing, Kobe, Japan 1981

Tadao Ando Architect

This complex, which clings to the side of a hill like a rock-climber, is unique in appearance and a masterpiece of architecture in Japan. The project was risky from the standpoint of technology, laws and regulations, and economics. The building could not have been designed by anyone other than Ando. Shown the original hillside, who else would have had the madcap idea of constructing an apartment budding on this incline after they had seen it? more

Habitat, Montreal, Canada 1967

Moshe Safdie Architect

Comprising a three-dimensional landscape of 354 stacked concrete "boxes", Habitat 67 pioneered the combination of two major housing typologies – the urban garden residence and the modular high-rise apartment building.

By utilising a variety of geometric arrangements, making use of both setbacks and voids, Safdie aimed to create a series of properties with their own identities. Each one featured its own roof garden... more

Hugh Hardy
1933 - 2017
“Good morning, sunshine” was one of his greetings, exclaimed as his caterpillar-bushy eyebrows seemed to leap with delight. “Happy day,” was another.

Hugh Hardy, an architect who breathed exuberant new life into some of New York City’s most storied theatrical landmarks, among them Radio City Music Hall and the New Amsterdam Theater, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 84. more

Theodore L. Lownie
1936- 2017
"I don't know that I ever met anyone who was more thoughtful, and caring, and eloquent with what he said," said Kenneth Riter.

Theodore Leonard Lownie liked buildings. Preferably older ones, with some history to them. Over decades, Mr. Lownie and his firm, Hamilton Houston Lownie Architects -- later shortened to HHL Architects -- left an indelible imprint on the city's historic architecture, from the Darwin... more
