Eichler Homes Forever

Joseph Eichler, creator of the popular Eichler homes that dot California (and a tiny bit of upstate New York), was neither an architect nor a designer. A developer with an interest in the work of Midcentury Modern icons such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, Eichler built around 11,000 homes that became known as the California Modern style in San Francisco and parts of southern California between the late 1940s and early 1970s. Eichler was particularly inspired by Wright’s Bazett House in Hillsborough, California, which he rented during World War II. The Usonian-style home, initially built for Sidney Bazett-Jones and his wife in the 1930s, was constructed in a double V-shape with red brick and redwood walls and a large central chimney. When Eichler rented the home, he allegedly grew so attached that he attempted... more Dwell Eichler

Alessandro Mendini

“I have, sometimes, problems with my objects, Sometimes my objects are aggressive even to me”

A concept model for a skateable house

A key figure in the history of modern design, Mendini's influence on the genre was profound. He was known for his prolific role in the radical design and postmodern design movements in the latter half of the 20th century. He was also key in re-inventing the image of Alessi, and founded Mode, his own design magazine. more

Desmond Waite
1927- 2019
"Dad was a gentleman. He thought about things carefully and was more than willing to help anyone if he could." - Richard Waite

His profession saw him work on hundreds of projects in the area, including sites in Lynn such as Thoresby College, Baker Lane and the Tuesday Market Place. Mr Waite worked for the Sandringham Estate for 35 years and was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order by the Queen. His son Richard Waite, also an architect, said: “He worked on a lot of prestigious buildings. On Christmas Day in 1966 he designed the original shop which is still there and designed the visitors centre expansion in 1993. “Dad also did a lot of work on Wood Farm for the Queen and Anmer Hall for the Duke and Duchess of Kent. more
